Town of Tulum

The town of Tulum was very interesting - There were small Carnival celebrations going on during the week we were there. This surprised me, as ash Wednesday had already occurred. When I asked about this, the answer I got was that they were not going to let lent interrupt their week or Carnival. I guess you need to keep your priorities straight.

We did two tours with the Sian Kaan Community Tours group. The revenues from the tours are currently supporting 50 Mayan Families. The infrastructure for the business was set up with the help of some NGOs. A few years ago - only a few Mayan Families were being supported in this manner. Pastor (one of our guides) was very proud of of his involvement in this local company - and has great hopes of its continued growth.

Many locals still work for companies owned by American, French,German, or Italian companies, and only get a small wage from their work.
